Update from yesterday: I mentioned that we got a barred owl in Monday afternoon. Yesterday we got a chance to do an exam and it appears that something (the probable car strike) did some ocular damage that we will have to wait for signs of improvement at this point. I did fail to mention the smell that is emanating from the owl though. It isn't a decaying smell or the smell of bacteria from the owl. No, this owl at some point has been sprayed by a skunk! I don't know if that meant that he tried to make a skunk dinner or if they happened to be going for the same meal. Today, as I was force feeding it and had to clean up the blood dribbles, I took a whiff of the wipe and boy did it stink. The smell isn't too strong, it is just very noticeable when you go to hold the owl or are trying to take the owl out of the crate. Initially I couldn't peg if it was a skunk or just a musky fox smell, but we have come to the conclusion that it was a skunk.
Other news at the Hollow, we have started our interview process for hiring a new rehabber with the hopes of having someone start around the first of the year. We will see, we will see how it all goes.
